Happy Greek national day! (for yesterday)

Last year we watched the Greek national day parade in the little town of Sami on Kefalonia - but this year sadly we couldn't be together for it.

Claire phoned me from outside the market in Chania to let me know she was there waiting for the parade of the local schoolkids to start, but I was very firmly still stuck in Salzburg.

What with it being a Sunday, it didn't even seem worth my time trying to get the bus into town to see if one of the Greek restaurants in Salzburg was open, and I hadn't thought to check in advance.

Still, after last night's Euro2008 result, I'm surprised that Greece hasn't gone into national mourning instead.

Despite a capacity Athens crowd, and no away fans being allowed, last night whilst England were grinding out a dreary 0-0 in Israel, Greece were being mauled 4-1 at home by the old enemy, Turkey
